How to Get to Inhambane & Getting Around (2026)
How to get to Inhambane, Mozambique: flights, driving the EN1, transfers and buses, plus how to get around once you arrive.
Inhambane is easier to reach than many travellers expect. You can fly, drive or take a bus, and once you arrive there are simple ways to get between the town, Tofo, Barra and Vilankulo. Here is how it all works.
By air
Inhambane Airport (INH) receives flights from Maputo, putting Tofo and Barra within easy reach — most lodges arrange an airport transfer of 20–40 minutes. Further north, Vilankulo Airport (VNX) is served by flights from Maputo and Johannesburg and is the gateway to the Bazaruto islands. Flying saves a long drive and is the quickest option for shorter trips.
By road
Inhambane lies just off the EN1, Mozambique's main north–south highway. From Maputo it is roughly a 6–7 hour drive; from the South African border at Ressano Garcia, allow a full day. The turn-off to Inhambane is near the town of Maxixe, from where a short ferry or road link crosses to the peninsula. Self-driving gives you freedom, but allow extra time and avoid driving at night.
By bus and chapa
Long-distance buses run up the EN1 from Maputo to Maxixe and Vilankulo. From Maxixe, a passenger ferry crosses the bay to Inhambane town. Shared minibuses (chapas) are the cheapest way to travel and connect all the main towns, though they are slow and crowded.
Getting around once you arrive
- Transfers: the easiest option — lodges arrange pick-ups from the airport or bus stop.
- Chapas: cheap shared minibuses between Inhambane, Tofo, Barra and beyond.
- Car or 4x4 hire: ideal for exploring at your own pace; a 4x4 is recommended for the sandy roads to Barra.
- Ferry: the Maxixe–Inhambane dhow and ferry crossing is cheap, frequent and scenic.
